GB Foods Ghana Ltd

The GB Foods Ghana project represents a strategic shift in Ghana’s agribusiness sector, transitioning from import-dependency to local industrial processing. Centered around the company’s flagship $5 million tomato processing facility in Tema and bolstered by a massive 6,000-acre agricultural expansion in the Afram Plains, the project is a cornerstone of Ghana’s agro-industrial strategy.

By vertically integrating tomato cultivation with local manufacturing, GB Foods aims to produce its iconic "Gino" and "Pomo" brands domestically, directly addressing the significant foreign exchange drain caused by the annual importation of over 54,000 tons of tomato paste.

Investment and Policy Alignment

This investment is a flagship example of alignment with Ghana’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative and the broader national goal of achieving food security through industrialization. GB Foods is bridging the gap between raw material production and industrial manufacturing. The initiative reflects a collaborative public-private model where the government facilitates infrastructure (such as irrigation support) and regulatory frameworks, while the investor brings capital, technology transfer, and market access

Economic Impacts

The GB Foods experience demonstrates that the most successful FDI in Ghana’s agricultural sector is that which prioritizes vertical integration. By controlling both the farm-gate production (Afram Plains) and the final processing (Tema), the company has created a sustainable model that overcomes the traditional bottlenecks of supply inconsistency.
